Remember the 90s film “Far and Away” with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman?

It’s the story of an Irish couple who emigrate to America and struggle to fulfill their dream of owning land and prospering free from oppression.

In the final scene of the film, every frontier family gets a special flag to mark their new homestead.

They all line up at the appointed time and when the gun fires, each family bolts into the prairie with their horses and covered wagons to mark their territory.

Each family owns the plot of land they claim and the surrounding acres.

This kind of homesteading doesn’t happen any more with actual land.

But this is exactly what’s happening in online business today.

Ray Edwards, my mentor and A-list copywriter, made this important point yesterday during the copywriter certification where I’m serving as coach and team teacher.

“Your social platform is the most underpriced real estate in the world! It’s land grab time!”

He encouraged all of us to become our own media company.

“Content is the new capital!” he said.

And he’s right.

Assuming we create good content.

It’s time to take advantage of all the FREE media channels.

If you’re like me, you’ve probably dabbled in this. But the time for dabbling is past… that is… if you want to build a truly loyal tribe of engaged, excited, hang-on-your-every-word fans.

With the app “Anchor,” you can have your own Spotify podcast by tea time.

In fact, I just created my very own this morning. It’s the “behind the scenes” version of the weekly podcast I’m currently in the middle of preparing to launch. It’s called “The Music of Copywriting DAILY.” (The official weekly podcast that launches soon is called “The Music of Copywriting.”)

With a simple YouTube channel, Facebook Lives, IGTV videos, and LinkedIn videos, you can have your very own TV show.

With Squarespace or on Medium, you can start your own magazine (aka, blog).

You want more customers who know, like, and trust you?

Start your own media empire.

You want more authority?

Start teaching what you know through every available outlet.

You want a rabid audience who’s happy to give you lots of money for more access to you more often?

Show them you deserve it by reaching out to them every day and giving them something of great value.

Give away your best stuff!

And then when you’re ready to give them more access to you and your time through coaching or seminars or courses, then they’ll happily give you their money.

Because you’ll have thoroughly earned it.

In academia there’s a famous cardinal rule.

Publish Or Perish!

It’s never been more true for ANYONE in business.

The world is smaller and smaller. More people have access to the internet and social platforms. Which means you have a much higher chance than ever before in the history of the world to ACTUALLY change people’s lives.

But if you’re not out there spreading YOUR Good News, they’ll never hear it and never find the cure to their problems.

So, what are you waiting for?

Me? I’ve been too happy being a hermit who only likes to crawl out of my cave every once in a blue moon. That’s my nature. But it’s no longer going to be my excuse.

“Do or do not. There is no try,” said a wise green man.
