Ah, Paris... You Really Pisssed Me Off
So… how do you keep a story alive over a 19-day stretch? With nothing but email?
There are several little “insider" tricks.
One of my favorites is what I did in the subject link of this email… and in the subject line of email #4 in the Pew Family Email Get-Us-To-Maui Melodrama.
Take a look…
Do you see it?
What’s going on in today’s subject line?
“Ooo la la…” is what I hear in my mind, accompanied by all the elegance and grace of a Parisian couple walking by twilight down the Champs-Elysées on the banks of the Seine.
And then I turn it on its head with the second half of the subject line… “you really pissed me off.”
Now have a look at the subject line in the Pew Family Melodrama sequence below…
“How our beautiful trip to Paris…”
Same thing. I draw the reader in. They’re hearing accordion music and imagining the Eiffel Tower, or French wine, or frogs legs dancing the Can-Can, or whatever...
But the last two words… “was ruined”… turn that mental image around in a heartbeat.
That’s the email “insider trading” tip of the day her on channel “Symphonic Copywriting.”
Simple contrast put a bug in people’s minds. A curiosity bug that has to be resolved.
But then… as soon as you resolve it… how do you keep their attention yet again so they come back the next day…?
Well, that’s tomorrow’s secret. So don’t get ahead of me here…
I bet you can figure out in this email below. You’re smart. I’m sure you’ll see it.

Subject: How our beautiful trip to Paris was ruined
"And the winner is...Janae Pew, playing Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto! She will travel with the BYU-Idaho Chamber Orchestra to Europe this summer. There, she will perform throughout France, Belgium, and Switzerland."
After Doug and I were married, we put our noses to the grindstone working on our music degrees.
One of the highlights for me was winning the concerto competition.
We got to go on tour to Europe together and play in the Chamber Orchestra together.
I was pregnant with our 1st baby. We were on Cloud 9.
Doug had always wanted to go to the Louvre. I was looking forward to getting to the top of the Eiffel Tower.
Unfortunately, the tour manager had booked our performance schedule to the gills. So when we arrived in Paris, he dropped the bad news bomb.
"I'm sorry to tell you that due to our rigid performance schedule, we will not be able to visit the Louvre or the Eiffel Tower while we're here in Paris. But we're about to pass the Louvre. It's coming up on your right-hand side. Ok, here it is. Everybody wave!"
We came all the way to Paris and we can't even...? But, the Mona Lisa...But...but...
The trip ended up being fun, but it wasn't the kind of trip we were expecting. I mean, why go to Europe only to perform and not take in the sites?
I should have tried to enjoy it more.
Little did I know that only 3 months later I would come about an inch away from death...More on that tomorrow...
For once I wish we could go on a trip just because. Not to play a concert. Not to attend a music festival, a conference, or some other gathering. Just a relaxing vacation.
Well, the time has finally come. We're going to Maui. I'm determined!
I've already earned my trip and my airfare. And I'm super close to earning Doug's trip. Just 18 more days until the deadline!
To get me over this last hurdle I'm putting on the biggest sale I've had.
And I'm pretty sure I'll never offer this much of a discount again.
Taking 35% off regular price means I don't even make any money on the sale. But the points (1 dollar = 1 point) go toward earning Doug's trip.
On Tuesday, June 26th, get 35% Off your entire order. The sale goes from 6 a.m. until midnight, mountain time.
Head on over to my special "I-wanna-get-35%-off" list by clicking the link below. That way I can make sure you don't want you to miss a thing!
Have a great germ-free day!
P.S. After I had a grand mal seizure in the exam room, Doug was pretty sure either our first baby or I was going to die.
Find out what ended up happening. See you tomorrow morning.
Did you catch it?
Isn’t that fun?
It’s a simple little device that… well, I’ll tell you tomorrow.
