Discovering My Superhero Identity

I had a big revelation recently. I discovered my superhero identity!

Since losing my university teaching job in 2015 I’ve been wandering around trying to figure out who I am and what the heck I’m doing with my life.

Enter the bald Jedi Master who sometimes walks with a cane…

No, not Yoda…

I’m talking about Master Ray Edwards!

While attending his “Copywriting As A Million-Dollar Business” seminar, he asked us to gather our whits, gird up our loins, dig deep inside, and discover our Superhero Identity.

And why did Ray insist that we take seriously on what seemed like a tedious or childish exercise?

Because if we want to make it in this self-branding business, we have to have a philosophy on which to build a powerful platform.

He quoted Ayn Rand which drove the point home.

“As a human being, you have no choice about the fact that you need a philosophy. Your only choice is whether you define your philosophy by a conscious, rational, disciplined process of thought and scrupulously logical deliberation — or let your subconscious accumulate a junk heap of unwarranted conclusions, false generalizations, undefined contradictions, undigested slogans, unidentified wishes doubts and fears, thrown together by your subconscious into a kind of mongrel philosophy and fused into a single, solid weight: self-doubt, like a ball and chain in the place where your mind’s wings should have grown.”

So, how do you define your Superhero Identity? Well, a superhero has 8 unique characteristics. Here are the 8 facets of my Superhero identity.

1. Origin Story

I come from the halls of academia and the concert halls and cathedrals of classical music. I grew up in a very talented musical family, married a professional musician and together we’re raising 5 gifted musical children. I was a rising star in contemporary classical music until cut down by a jealous boss.

2. Superpower

My superpower is Empathy. When I’m composing music or copy I’m always thinking about who is hearing or reading what I’m writing. What are their problems? What miseries do they have in their life? What do they need to soothe or solve that misery? How can my notes or my words raise them out of their hole and bring them to green pastures? Walking several miles in their emotional shoes gives my melodies and my melodic words a certain special power that bypasses the head and goes straight for the heart.

3. Purpose & Mission

I’m on a mission to bring beauty and joy into people’s lives through music and through products and services that truly solve their problems. My every note and word is written with the power-packed intent of helping them overcome their troubles. I work to empower musicians and entrepreneurs who carry the message of the notes or the copy to the hungry audience. My primary audience is first and foremost my family.

4. Secret Identity

I’m “Doug the Dad.” I’m the guy next door who works from home and drives his kids to and from school usually barefoot and disheveled. I seem to care more about my lawn than I do about my personal appearance.

5. Slogan

“Skip the head, aim for the heart.”

6. Weakness

Saying “yes” to too many things. Helping too many people at the expense of staying focused on my mission.

7. Super Name

The Symphonic Copywriter.

8. Arch-Enemy

Anything or anyone standing in the way of me being able to provide for my family.
