How a pound dropping brain hack can make you a much better writer

So today's my 39th birthday...

...and the only reason I bring it up is because I've given myself an immense challenge.

The kind of challenge that scares me.

Which means it's a challenge I really need to stand up and face head-on.

I've challenged myself to lose 100 lbs. by the time I turn 40.

That's 100 lbs. in 365 days.

... but to paraphrase Hal Elrod in his excellent book, "The Miracle Equation" ...

... "I am 100% committed to maintaining Unwavering Faith that I will lose 100 lbs. by my 40th birthday, and I will continue putting forth Extraordinary Effort every day until I do. No matter what, there is no other option. The reason I am committed to my mission is because the kind of person I must come to achieve this will allow me to positively influence my wife, children, family members, and everyone in my sphere of influence, and being able be healthy and vibrant means more to me than anything else in the world I might achieve."

One of the biggest and best helpers I've discovered on this journey to having a healthy body once and for all is the author of the book, "Authentic Health," Dr. Gus Vickery, MD.

One of the thousands of helpful teachings in his book has to do with intermittent fasting.

Fasting, like writing, seems to most like a painful thing. Like torture.

But Dr. Gus helps reframe this way of thinking by explaining that the feeling of hunger that come are actually a really GOOD sign. They are the feeling of your body getting healthier. They are the feeling of your brain learning that YOU are in control. That you DON'T need all that poisonous processed food in your body. That your body is getting back to the way God designed it to be. HEALTHY!

Teaching your brain to understand the feelings of hunger between meals is SO IMPORTANT. But it takes time. And it seems like torture at first.

But pretty soon, your body adapts and you literally start to restructure how your brain and body react to these feelings.

Have you ever felt that while you're writing a long series of emails, or a sales page, or any other kind of writing, that you're being tortured?

It's natural. It happens to every writer, especially early on in their writing careers.

It happens to composers too.

Any excuse to get up and take a break, get a drink of water, stretch your calves, make sure the kids are still watching TV, see if the mailman arrived yet, or check that the ice maker is still working since you haven't heard it in a while... (oh, no... I've never done that before...)...

...any excuse, no matter how small is an escape from our internal writer's prison.

But to really go pro... you have to write, and write, and write, and write.

You don't have to be some kind of masochist or psychopath who loves pain and anguish...

... but the sooner you can start reprogramming your mind, just like I'm doing with my intermittent fasting...

...the sooner you'll get into the habit of becoming a REAL writer.

And the truth is, there's only 1 way to get better at writing, when all is said and done.

You have to write, and write, and write, and write. Every day. Rain or shine. Hot or cold. Sick or well. Christmas or Columbus Day.

So stop reading this, and get to work!

You can do it. Enjoy the burn! It's making you better and better.

That's what I'm doing all day today.

Get to it!

#The CopyComposer

What's your trick to getting more writing done?

I'd love to hear. I often highjack my brain with little rewards like... "now you get to listen to Bohemian Rhapsody" ... or ... "write for another hour and you can have that Dr. Zevia drink you're craving." That does help a lot. But mostly, I just have to FORCE myself to sit down and start typing. Even if all I'm typing is... "I don't know what to write..."

What works for you?

And if you need any help, here are a few ways I might be able to assist you...
