Sometimes enough is enough.

I’m sure you know the feeling.

As we got closer to our “Get-Us-To-Maui” promotion, our 18-hour super sale, we increased the drama in our stories.

More drama = more glued eyeballs on the other end.

If you do it right.

With only 2 days left before the sale, we started sending a lot of emails to those who signed up for the special notification list.

We piled on the stories. Our already warm audience started to boil with anticipation.

This email definitely turned up the dial on the stove-top audience burner. 

I used a somewhat unfair advantage of my sobbing 6-year old to lay it on thick.

Here’s the story...


Email #12 of 18

Subject: I can’t take this any more

It had hit the fan.

Enough was enough.

I’d been through various heavy treatments to cure my ITP.

Nothing worked.

The doctors were really pressuring me to have a splenectomy. But Doug was still in Poland. He had one month to go.

We spoke on the phone late one Sunday night and I completely lost it. I couldn’t take it all anymore.

Doug was really finished with everything he needed to do. He’d finished his dissertation. He’d had a big recital at the Chopin University. He’d had a big performance of his Catholic Mass at the Cathedral downtown. It was even on national television and the radio.

So, we decided it was time to call it quits.

Doug got permission from the University, the Fulbright Commission, and his teacher to end his Fulbright a month early.

A few days after that phone call, it was time to tell the kids that Daddy was coming home early.

We had a fun little routine for our phone calls. As soon as the kids picked up the phone Doug would say…"how many more days until Daddy comes home…?”

But this time, even though we still have 30+ days in our count, Doug was going to surprise our 6-year-old Aubrey (our oldest) with the news.

He said…"Aubrey, guess what? I have a surprise for you!”


“I’m coming home tomorrow.”

She dropped the phone and fell to the floor in a puddle of tears. She’d been so brave for so long.

She’s such a good mature girl. We didn’t realize how hard it all had been on her too.

Well, Doug came home the next day. It happened to be my birthday. It was the best birthday present ever!

The doctors took out my spleen a couple weeks later. The operation cured my ITP almost overnight.
